The charm of the National Landscape Rivierengebied

In the National Landscape River Area, cycle along winding dikes and polder roads between orchards, flowery grasslands and along rivers. This route takes you along the Lek and through the Kromme Rijnstreek.

Former forts Water and wide views are the ingredients when cycling along the Lek. And of course the forts you pass: Lunet aan de Snel from 1846 and Werk aan de Groeneweg that was built at the beginning of the First World War. A striking place on your route is Tull en't Waal. In this charming little village you can see the Reformed Church from 1778 on the Waalseweg and (at number 85) the remarkably well-preserved eighteenth-century farm Geerestein.

Flowering orchards The Kromme Rijnstreek is dominated by grasslands and orchards that give the landscape a fresh colour in the spring. It is an ideal area to get a breath of fresh air and recharge the proverbial battery. On the horizon lies the village of Werkhoven, from a distance you can see the church tower, the water tower and the Rijn en Weert mill. Dismounted? Then enjoy this region a little longer with a meal and a stay at Postillion Hotel Utrecht Bunnik.

Fort Vechten From the Marsdijk at junction 39 you can see Fort Vechten, the second largest fort in the New Dutch Waterline. The Waterline Museum is located in the fort, where you can learn all about the use of water as a weapon. Just outside the fort is a replica of a Roman watchtower. In Roman times, a castellum stood here to guard the then border.
