Description

You can enjoy a lovely walk just outside the Limburg village of Swalmen. This varied route takes you along the Asseltse Plassen, through the Swalmdal and through the Vuilbemden nature reserve. Wear waterproof walking shoes!

Ouborg Castle
The Swalm is a stream that originates in Germany and ultimately flows into the Maas. The stream valley is fairly unspoilt: you will find moist meadows and swamp forests. Just outside Swalmen you can see the ruins of Ouborg Castle along the Swalm. This castle was built around 1300 and destroyed by fire in the fifteenth century. The ruin mainly consists of the lower part of an octagonal keep and is one of the oldest castle ruins in the Netherlands.

The Vuilbemden
In Asselt you can see the St. Dionysius Church, located on a church hill, whose tower dates from 1515. The Asseltse Plassen were created by digging gravel and belong to the Maasplassen, you have beautiful views. The Vuilbemden is an old Meuse meander that mainly consists of swamp forest. Some steep edges here are about six meters high.
