Description
Just outside the Limburg village of Swalmen you can go for a lovely walk. This varied route takes you along the Asseltse Plassen, through the Swalmdal and through the Vuilbemden nature reserve. Put on waterproof hiking boots!
Castle Ouborg
The Swalm is a stream that originates in Germany and eventually flows into the Maas. The stream valley is fairly untouched: you will find damp meadows and marsh forests. Just outside Swalmen you can see the ruins of Castle Ouborg along the Swalm. This castle was built around 1300 and was already destroyed by fire in the fifteenth century. The ruin mainly consists of the lower part of an octagonal keep and is one of the oldest castle ruins in the Netherlands.
The Dirty Beds
In Asselt you can see the Sint-Dionysiuskerk, located on a church hill, whose tower dates back to 1515. The Asseltse Plassen were created by digging gravel and belong to the Maasplassen, you have beautiful views. The Vuilbemden is an old Maasmeander that mainly consists of swamp forest. Some steep edges here are about six meters high.
