Walking through the Groote Zand

This route takes you through the Groote Zand, which is located on the northern edge of the Hooghalen Forestry. This area used to be part of a vast desert with drifting sand. Now you will find a varied heathland with high sand peaks and soaking wet lowlands. There are heather, bell heather and crowberry. You can also see a lot of peat rush. In the forests surrounding the heathland you walk past oaks, birches, pines and a few sweet chestnuts. A beautiful area that is also locally called Het Paradijs. It is wonderfully quiet here, ideal for a day of relaxation and finding yourself. About three quarters of your route you cross the road, passing the Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork. Then you walk through the forests back to Camping Diana Heide.
