Walking through the Groote Zand

This route takes you through the Groote Zand, which is located on the northern edge of the Hooghalen Boswachterij. This area was once part of a vast wasteland with drifting sand. Now you will find a varied heathland landscape with high sand heads and soaking wet lowlands. Shrub heather, cap heath and crow heath grow there. You can also see a lot of peat rushes there. In the forests surrounding the heathland you walk past oaks, birches, pines and some sweet chestnuts. A beautiful area that is also locally called Paradise. It is wonderfully quiet here, ideal for a day of relaxation and rejuvenation. About three-quarters of the way through your route you cross the road, passing the Camp Westerbork Memorial Center. Then you walk through the woods back to Camping Diana Heide.
