The church is one of the oldest Romanesque churches in the province. Some glazed monastic mops can be seen in the outer walls. In the north wall, partially visible, a 'Noormannenpoortje'. On the original beams of the hood you can find 'counting marks' that indicate the construction sequence. The roof rider with weather vane with the coat of arms of the Ripperdas, memorial plates in the choir room and the family crypt under the choir.

Remnants of tuff show the age of this church. Standing on a high mound with the original radial roads still largely present. Romano-Gothic expanded in the 13th century and several centuries later with a five-sided choir. Beautiful paintings: on the melon vaults images of animals, Bible stories and saints with their attributes: such as Catherine with the wheel, and Pancratius with his sword.

The terps can be found in Friesland and the mounds in Groningen. Terpen and wierden are artificial (residential) hills, built for times of emergency where the inhabitants could flee to higher ground. Later whole villages were built on the hills.

This is one of the oldest brick churches on the highest mound in the Ommelanden. The church was built in the late 12th century. Romanesque in origin, but partly amputated in the 19th century: the semicircular apse was replaced by a flat wall. Today the church is owned by the Stichting Oude Groninger churches and functions as a wedding location in the municipality of Loppersum.
