Some nature reserves run right across the border of the Netherlands and Germany. This includes the Krosewicker Grenzwald, which is partly in Gelderland and the rest in Germany. Enjoy the quiet forests and wet heaths of this nature reserve, the pleasant town of Vreden and the beautiful nature around the Zwillbrocker Venn on this route.
Cross-border nature reserves
The starting point of this route near the village of Rekken. From here you cycle a bit along the river Berkel that flows through the landscape here. You then cycle through the Krosewicker Grenzwald across the German border. In the town of Vreden you can make a short stop to settle down on a terrace or to stroll past the historic houses and buildings. From Vreden you cycle back to the Netherlands along the Zwillbrocker Venn. Then try hiking route 381658 and explore the Krosewicker Grenzwald on your hiking boots.
The Zwillbrocker Venn
Just across the border at Groenlo lies the Zwillbrocker Venn. This fen was created by peat extraction in this area. Now you will find both forests and swamp areas. That sounds like a perfectly normal nature reserve, but there is one thing that makes this area special: flamingos can regularly be found along the water. This area is the most northerly breeding area of flamingos in Europe. You can see the birds here from March to June.
