Description
Some nature reserves run right across the border of the Netherlands and Germany. This also applies to the Krosewicker Grenzwald, a small part of which is located in Gelderland and the rest in Germany. On this route, enjoy the peaceful forests and wet heathlands of this nature reserve, the pleasant town of Vreden and the beautiful nature around the Zwillbrocker Venn.
Cross-border nature reserves
The starting point of this route is near the village of Rekken. From here you cycle for a while along the Berkel river that flows through the landscape here. Then you cycle through the Krosewicker Grenzwald across the German border. In the town of Vreden you can make a short stop to sit on a terrace or stroll past the historic houses and buildings. From Vreden you cycle back to the Netherlands along the Zwillbrocker Venn. Then try hiking route 381658 and explore the Krosewicker Grenzwald on your hiking boots.
The Zwillbrocker Venn
The Zwillbrocker Venn is located just across the border at Groenlo. This fen was created by peat extraction in this area. Now you will find both forests and swamp areas. That sounds like an ordinary nature reserve, but there is one thing that makes this area special: flamingos can regularly be found along the water. This area is the northernmost breeding area for flamingos in Europe. You can see the birds here from March to June.
