Description
This route takes you through the Waterland, a region between Landsmeer, Volendam and Monnickendam. This low-lying rural area with its vast peat meadow landscape is so unique that it has been designated as a National Landscape.
The Twiske
The first kilometers you cycle through two beautiful nature reserves. First you come through the Twiske, a nature and recreation area that was created, among other things, by peat extraction. Here you have beautiful views over the Stootersplas and the rough marshlands. From junction 15 you drive through the Ilperveld, a vast brackish peat meadow area with countless ditches and reed beds. It is wonderful to make miles through this peaceful landscape.
Picturesque Monnickendam
What about the beautiful town of Monnickendam? In the city center you stumble, so to speak, over the monumental buildings with characteristic facades. A wonderful place to get off and enjoy the unique historical atmosphere at your leisure. You can see the island of Marken from the medieval Waterlandse Zeedijk. In Landsmeer you can enjoy your day with a drink and snack at Café de Driesprong.
