Walking through Het Twiske: round Stooterplas

This water-rich area is especially popular among water sports enthusiasts, but you can also walk very well. Het Twiske already appears on thirteenth-century maps and originally consisted of peat meadows along the river Het Twiske. Peat was mined here on a small scale for centuries. Because the reclaimed land was not suitable for agriculture, Het Twiske has been set up as a nature and recreation area. The Stootersplas was created after sand was extracted here for the construction of the Coentunnel route. In this wetland area you will see many marsh, reed and water birds. For example, widgeons overwinter in large numbers on the Stootersplas and you will also find the black-tailed godwit, moustache, bittern and marsh harrier in this area. You will also see Scottish Highlanders.
