Walking through Het Twiske: tour of Stooterplas

This watery area is especially popular among water sports enthusiasts, but it is also great for hiking. Het Twiske already appears on thirteenth-century maps and originally consisted of peat meadows along the river Het Twiske. Peat was extracted here on a small scale for centuries. Because the reclaimed land was not suitable for agriculture, Het Twiske has been designed as a nature and recreation area. The Stootersplas was created after sand was extracted here for the construction of the Coentunnel route. In this watery area you will see many swamp, reed and water birds. For example, wigeons overwinter in large numbers on the Stootersplas and you will also find the godwit, mustache, bittern and marsh harrier in this area. You will also see Scottish Highlanders there.
