Tour of the Heuvelrug and Grebbelinie from Kesteren

The best of both worlds is combined in this cycle route: the wooded southern area of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the water-rich environment of the Neder-Rijn. On the edge of Veenendaal lies the country estate Prattenburg. On the estate stands a house with a castle-like appearance, built in 1887. The estate was first mentioned in a document from 1474. At the foot of the wooded Grebbeberg you cycle along the banks of the Rhine. Take a break at the Grebbesluis and the associated eighteenth-century earthen fortifications of the Grebbelinie. From the Grebbedijk you look out over the Blauwe Kamer, an unspoilt nature reserve with lakes, grasslands and swamp forest. A little later you cross the Rhine again.
