Description
This route takes you across the former island of Schokland, one of the oldest areas of Flevoland. Cycle over the dike and along the water with a view of the old land, over the Oud-Kraggenburg mound and along the vast fields.
Kraggenburg
The starting point of this route is in Kraggenburg. This village is surrounded by no less than 800 hectares of forest and all kinds of nature reserves. The place is named after a light keeper's house and a toll house that is now called Oud Kraggenburg. This house is one of the oldest buildings in the Noordoostpolder. From here you cycle through the vast polders of Schokland and along the banks of the Ketelmeer and the Zwarte Meer. In some areas you can come face to face with Scottish Highlanders, a special experience.
From desert island to mainland
When Schokland was still an island, it offered few opportunities for existence. Due to continuous land erosion, it was no longer possible to continue living there around 1859. All residents of the island were evacuated to the mainland, leaving an uninhabited island. After the reclamation of the Zuiderzee, Schokland was once again part of the mainland. A long row of trees is all that remains of the former island's border. In 1995, Schokland was placed on the Unesco World Heritage List.
Schokland rock garden
Glaciers from the penultimate Ice Age have left behind a number of erratic boulders in the Noordoostpolder. These boulders are placed together in the Gesteentetuin. Take a look at this garden and the associated visitor center to learn more about the history of Schokland's nature. Children can enjoy themselves in the viewing and doing attic with all kinds of games.
