Description
The current IJsselmeer, the Markermeer and the towns and villages around it have a rich history. The Zuiderzee Route takes you in a circuit along the entire lake, where you cycle through centuries-old Enkhuizen, authentic Volendam and the Hanseatic city of Kampen.
Get a breath of fresh air on the Zuiderzee Route
This long-distance cycling route is recommended if you like to cycle several days in a row. Along the way you have a beautiful view of the former Zuiderzee. In 1932, the Zuiderzee and the Wadden Sea were closed off from each other with the Afsluitdijk to prevent flooding disasters in the future. Along the route you will find all kinds of nice catering establishments where you can have a tasty bite to eat or stay the night. The starting point of the route is in Enkhuizen. Visit the Zuiderzee Museum here. From here you cycle to the tip of North Holland and cycle to Friesland via the Afsluitdijk. You can then get a breath of fresh air along the edge of the IJsselmeer and then cycle on to the Weerribben-Wieden National Park to Kampen.
Natural beauty on the Veluwe
The last part of the route runs from Kampen back to Enkhuizen via Amsterdam. Along the way you cycle through the fairytale forests of the Veluwe. Enjoy the shade between the trees and keep your eyes open. You might even see a red deer or a marten.
Shortened route
Is cycling the entire Zuiderzee Route a bit too much for you? Then you can also go for a shortened version of the tour. For example, take the ferry from Enkhuizen to Urk and then cycle back to Enkhuizen. You cycle a bit through the Flevopolder where you can enjoy the peace and quiet. You can also view two beautiful lock complexes here: the Hoge Knarsluis and the Lage Knarsluis.
