Tour Hoogeveense Vaart from Coevorden

Coevorden is a beautiful old town, with Castle Coevorden as a radiant center. A place with history, because the first castle was already here around 1025. The core of Coevorden is also worth a visit. From Coevorden you can take a bike ride along the Hoogeveensche Vaart, a canal that leads from Hoogeveen to the Meppelerdiep near Meppel. The first part was completed in 1625. In the period 1964-1988, the canal was changed into a modern shipping channel: ships of at least 300 tons could pass through here, outside the built-up areas of Meppel and Hoogeveen. Now you can see both commercial and recreational shipping. There are three locks: the Rogatsluis, the Ossesluis and the Nieuwebrugsluis - always nice to take a look.
