Description
This cycling tour is highly recommended in the spring period. You cycle past the beautiful asparagus fields in Central Limburg and asparagus is only available in the spring, officially from mid-April to the end of June. Enjoy the beautiful landscape and stop somewhere along the way to actually taste that delicious asparagus.
Heathlands, forests and asparagus fields
The start and end point of this route is located in the middle of nature, near Stramproy. At the start of the route you cycle through the Stramproyse Heide. Later the heathlands change into forests with here and there an open field with asparagus. After just over 8 kilometers you cycle into the center of Stramproy and from there you cycle in an arc to Tungelroy. You cycle over the famous Tungelroyse stream that starts in Belgium and flows into the Maas.
Mill St. Anna
In Tungelroy you pass the St. Anna flour mill. This mill was built between 1875 and 1876 to replace two water mills. There was a warehouse in front of the mill where first a suction gas engine and later a diesel engine were installed. Furthermore, a sawmill was established next to the mill. In 1991 the mill was sold and the warehouse was separated from the mill. The mill has been repaired many times over the years.
Mill de Nijverheid
Other mills you will encounter during your tour are Molen de Nijverheid in Stramproy from 1903 and the St. Jansmolen dating from 1804. Nowadays, Molen de Nijverheid is located in the middle of the houses. Previously, all those buildings were not there yet, so the mill could catch the wind more easily. Yet the mill is still kept running by volunteer millers. Visit the mill and see how grain is milled.
