Walking through surprising Weert

Weert received city rights as early as 1414, there is plenty of cultural history to experience. Experience it for yourself and discover that Weert is still old-fashioned friendly.

Saint Martin's Church
You will immediately see some beautiful buildings on the historic market of Weert. For example, the former town hall from the sixteenth century, now the Jacob van Horne Museum. The Sint-Martinuskerk dates from 1456 and is one of the last two remaining hall churches in the Netherlands. It is in the top 100 of the most important Dutch monuments. On the Biest you can see some monumental buildings, on the other side of the park is the old tithe barn.

int-Donatus chapel
At the drawbridge on the Noordkade you can see the only preserved clay pipe oven in Western Europe. At Gasterij de Stoof you can take a nice break with something tasty. On the Hushoverweg you can see the neo-Gothic Sint-Donatus chapel from 1872. A little further on you will pass two flour mills. The Wilhelmus Huberts dates from 1904, on the Zuid-Willemsvaart is the Sint Oda from 1883. Across the street is the flour factory from 1938, an impressive national monument.

Former castles
There are two former castles on the Biest. In the thirteenth century, the Lords of Horne built castle Aldeborch. In the fifteenth century a new fortress was built further on: Nijenborgh. The Friars Minor converted Aldeborch into a monastery, Nijenborgh was destroyed in 1702 during the Siege of Weert. A new mansion has appeared on the foundations, and there are plans to turn the site (now used as a sawmill) into a city park.
