In the Green Heart, culture and nature go hand and hand. Cycling over winding dikes you will see old peatlands, cultivated polders and historic towns. The route takes you past the Reeuwijkse Plassen, among other things. In the rectangular shape of the lakes you can still see how the former peatlands were parceled out at the time. The peat was used by potteries and beer brewers in Gouda. From the Westvlisterdijk you look out over the swampy banks of the Bergvliet. Oudewater is the oldest city in the Green Heart. You will see, among other things, the fifteenth-century Grote or Sint-Michaelskerk. The town hall with Renaissance facade, built in 1588, is also a beautiful sight, as is the Waag from 1482. Woerden also has beautiful monuments.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
