Walking along the Bennekomse Meent and Hel

This walk takes you through the outskirts of Veenendaal. Make sure you have sturdy shoes, because part of the route you walk on unpaved paths. First you make a tour along the Bennekomse Meent. This nature reserve consists of species-rich grasslands that grow on moist peat soil. These so-called blue grasslands used to be common, but are now a rarity in the Netherlands. You walk part of the route along the Valley Canal, also called De Grift. This waterway was dug during the 1930s. However, some parts had existed for centuries and were used to drain peat. On the edge of the built-up area you walk along De Hel, another rare blue grassland. The route ends with something tasty at Buitenhorst Vers en Smakelijk.
