Cycling through Coevorden and the surrounding area

Coevorden is an old fortified city that once lay on the route from Groningen to Münster. The star-shaped moat, the street layout, and historic buildings date from the period after the city fire of 1592. You will cycle past the Reformed Church from 1641, among other sights. This is one of the first Protestant church buildings in the Netherlands. For centuries, the outskirts of Coevorden were a vast marshland. Now, you can enjoy a delightful bike ride through a landscape of grasslands, arable fields, and groves. You will cycle for a few kilometers along the Schoonebeekerdiep, a small stream that marks the border between the Netherlands and Germany. Here, you will experience the characteristic silence of Drenthe. On the way back, you cycle along the Coevorden-Piccardie Canal, which flows through the German peatlands.
