Cycling through the Oldambt

With its wealth of nature and culture, the Oldambt region of Groningen is an ideal cycling region. This route takes you through historic Winschoten and past the Ennemaborgh and the Midwolderbos. Keep an eye on the time, because this cycling day will fly by quickly.

Battle of Heiligerlee
Squeeze your brakes in Nieuw-Beerta, because this village enjoys a protected village view. The church in Nieuwolda does not have a weathercock on the top, but a mermaid as a reference to the land that has been reclaimed from the sea. In Heiligerlee you will find two museums opposite each other. In the Battle of Heiligerlee Museum you can go back to the time of the Eighty Years' War with a time capsule. The Bell Foundry Museum is located in a restored factory building from 1862.

Dollard
From the dike along the Dollard you have a beautiful view of the salt marshes, mudflats and the mudflats. On the other side of the water you can see the harbors of Emden. It is difficult to imagine, but when the Dollard was created, about thirty villages and hamlets were drowned by storm surges. A little further on you drive over the Punt van Reide, an old embankment of the river Eems.

Mill town Winschoten
Winschoten has a long history: it was given city rights in 1391. There are many monumental buildings: the thirteenth-century Dutch Reformed Church on the Market Square is a gem. From d\\\'Olle Witte, a sixteenth-century tower, you have a beautiful view of the city and surroundings. Winschoten is also called the Mill City. Of the original thirteen mills, three flour mills remain. Mill Edens dates from 1763, Molen Berg from 1854 and Molen Dijkstra from 1862. All three mills are a national monument.
