The Winterswijk National Landscape offers a varied backdrop for a cycling tour, in which grassland changes into wooded banks and beautiful ash trees. You can enjoy peace and space in the 22,000-hectare bocage landscape in the outlying area. You will also find imposing Scholtengoederen, meandering streams, atmospheric vineyards and cozy tea gardens on this route.
The starting point of the route is in the attractive center of Winterswijk. From here you cycle towards the German border. You pass water mills and cycle through the nature reserve of the Knownelle before you cycle into Germany via a green border crossing. The German hinterland on this route is also definitely worth a visit with the natural beauty of Burlo and the Vardingholterveen.
From the viewpoints you can look out over the German Vardingholter peat bog. The route leads you further to Burlo where a beautiful monastery is located. Via narrow forest paths you cycle across the border back to the Netherlands towards the end point. Be sure to take a look at the Quarry on the way. At the end of the bike ride you will return to Winterswijk, where you can settle down on one of the cozy terraces in the center. A nice snack or drink will probably go in after a day on the pedals.
