Cycling route: 335714
Provided by: Schoonenberg
A wide landscape, a beautiful coastline and picturesque villages with a rich history: Groningen has it all. This route takes you through the Hogeland, a somewhat higher area in the northeast of Groningen. The landscape of grasslands, crooked ditches and winding dikes has been created over the centuries by the silting up of sea clay. On the Wadden coast you can enjoy a breath of fresh air, but also spot birds in the freshwater marsh. Further on you drive along the bank of the Eems estuary, a place where you have beautiful views and see many ships. In the Groningen terp villages you see beautiful manor farms and churches. Loppersum has a characteristic atmosphere. In Uithuizen you come across the fourteenth-century Menkemaborg, one of the most beautiful of the seventeen still existing Groningen borgen.
