The vast splendor of Hunsingo

Hunsingo is a region in the northeast of Groningen. With its wide landscape, high skies, old wierde villages and winding dikes, this region is very suitable for a wonderful day of cycling.

Groningen churches
In the wierde villages you will come across many beautiful ancient churches. In Oosternieland you can admire the fourteenth-century Nicholas Church, which is located on a moated mound. In Leermens you will pass the eleventh-century Donatus Church, which features Romanesque, Romano-Gothic and Gothic architectural styles. There is no shortage of beautiful monuments on this route anyway: Onderdendam, Middelstum and Warffum, with a height of six meters one of the highest wierden in the province, enjoy protected village views.

Museum Menkemaborg
Groningen once had more than 200 guarantors. Many disappeared, partly because owners had to sell their property to pay off their debts. The fourteenth-century Menkemaborg in Uithuizen is one of the most beautiful of the seventeen remaining borgs. It is now a museum where you can get an idea of the life of the Groningen junkers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Old Groningen windmills
It is not only the old churches, castles or imposing mansions that determine the view in Hunsingo. You will also see some beautiful windmills on this route, such as the Hunsingo, a flour mill from 1855 that is located on the Boterdiep in Onderdendam. Korenmolen De Hoop also dates from 1855 and is also located on the Boterdiep. De Leeuw is a corn and hulling mill from 1865 in Zeerijp. Special is the story of Eva, the corn and hulling mill in Usquert. This mill was built here in 1818, although it first stood in Bedum for a number of decades with another mill, Adam. The'mill couple\\\' were eventually separated from each other. Adam moved to Delfzijl to serve as a flour mill there. Eva burned down in 1890, but was rebuilt a year later.
