The quiet Drenthe

Go out and cycle to discover the northern tip of Drenthe, close to the border with Groningen. You have beautiful views, old villages with Saxon farms and interesting nature reserves.

The Onlands
Between Paterswolde and Peize you cycle through the Onlanden: a bowl between the higher Drenthe sandy soils and Groningen clay soils. You will find low and wet soils, flowery grasslands, ditches and small forests. In this area along the Eelderdiep you see many meadow birds. Moreover, you have beautiful views along two adjacent lakes. The Hoornse Meer was created in the 1970s through sand extraction, the Paterswoldsemeer was already excavated for peat in the sixteenth century.

Old stream valleys
Above esdorp Norg you drive through quiet forests. You also cycle through a few stream valleys, such as the relief-rich stream valley of the Runsloot north of the esdorpje Vries. With its many wooded banks and coppice woods, this intact stream valley landscape forms a beautiful old Drenthe backdrop. Just like the villages of Peest, one of the oldest in Drenthe, and Paterswolde, which enjoys a protected village view. Back in Eelde, enjoy a tasty snack at Cafe Theater G & A Boelens!
