Description

The Loosdrechtse Plassen form the central part of the Eastern Vechtplassen. This Natura 2000 area is a special protection zone for birds, but also for plants and other animals. The ponds were created because ditches and ponds were dug in the original wet peat to drain the area. The low moors that arose were used as pasture land or for peat extraction. However, the land between the ditches has been excavated or washed away by the water over the centuries, so that the puddles gradually became larger and larger. It is now a popular recreational area with a rich flora and tauna.

You start the route at Hotel Flora Batava. You go in the direction of Breukelen and then you see a kind of castle on the corner. This is Ridderhofstad Gunterstein. The castle was built in 1680 on the ruins of a medieval castle from 1300 that was demolished in 1511 to use the stones for something else. Simultaneously with the construction, a park was created, which was partly transformed into an English landscape park in the 19th century. You will then pass Fort Tienhoven. Fort Tienhoven was part of the New Dutch Waterline. Completed in 1850, it consisted of a defensible guard house measuring 15 by 15 metres. If you continue cycling, you will cycle along the draw holes and the Loosdrecht lakes through Breukeleveen, Muyeveld and Boomhoek. You then approach Sypesteyn Castle Museum. This castle was built in 1900 and is now used as a museum. Here you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, a pastry or a snack on the terrace at the historic castle garden. If you continue your route you will pass Nieuw- and Oud Loosdrecht. You then cycle along the water again and head towards Loenen aan de Vecht and then to Nieuwersluis. In Nieuwersluis you have time to take a look at Fort Nieuwersluis. Fort Nieuwersluis is an old fort that was dug in 1446. It was a connection between the Vecht and the Angstel, an important improvement for inland shipping between Amsterdam, Utrecht and Muiden. Due to the difference in water level between the two rivers, a lock was necessary. This is also where the name Nieuwersluis comes from. On the way back to Flora Batava you will pass the beautiful country estates of Vredenhoff, Rupelmonde, Sterrenschans and Over-Holland. Hope you enjoyed your bike ride.
