The charm of the Groningen polder land

You quickly associate Groningen with vast polders and long canals. This route takes you through this characteristic landscape where you can spot many water and meadow birds. The Hoge Hereweg runs right through the Appelbergen nature reserve. Appelbergen later became a military training ground. You will also find a monument here to commemorate these victims. The nature reserve consists of forests, heathland, peat remnants, marshes and a few shifting sand hills. Near Appelbergen you drive past the Witte Molen, which was built in 1892. With its white wooden hull and red corner piping, it really is a picture. On the banks of the Zuidlaardermeer you drive past willows, alder groves and polders.
