Description

Groningen is quickly associated with vast polders and long waterways. This route takes you through this characteristic landscape where you can spot many water and meadow birds. The Hoge Hereweg runs right through the Appelbergen nature reserve. Appelbergen later became a military training ground. You will also find a monument here to commemorate these victims. The nature reserve consists of forests, heathland, peat remnants, marshes and a few drifting sand hills. Near Appelbergen you drive past the Witte Molen, which was built in 1892. With its white wooden hull and red corner rushes, it is truly a picture. On the banks of the Zuidlaardermeer you drive past willows, alder swamp forests and polders. You end this beautiful tour at Paviljoen Appelbergen. You are very welcome here for coffee with apple pie, delicious sandwiches and freshly baked pancakes.
