Characteristic of Salland

Salland is an old region where you will find small cozy towns, estates and quiet nature reserves. With this varied route, the kilometers will automatically roll out from under your wheels.

Overijssels Vechtdal
Around the Overijsselse Vecht you drive through a landscape of flowery meadows, old hedgerows and quiet forests. You also pass through the hamlets of Junne and Beerze, which still largely consist of old thatched Saxon farms and ash trees. In the forests and heathlands of the Beerze nature reserve you seem to cycle back in time, it is so peaceful here. At Eetcafe de Brink you can refuel along the way with a drink and a snack.

Eerde Castle
In the Earlier Achterbroek you drive through an age-old landscape of meadows, hedgerows and forests. Especially in the summer you can enjoy the beauty of flowers in the fields. You pass Eerde Castle, which is surrounded by a moat. From the stone arch bridge you have a beautiful view of the castle, which took its current form in 1715. Although the history of the castle dates back to the fourteenth century, when robber baron Evert van Essen made the area unsafe from this castle.

Ommen Regional Museum
If you cross the Vecht in Ommen, you will pass Den Oordt, one of the few remaining hexagonal windmills in the Netherlands. This mill would previously have stood in Bathmen in the Zaan region. It was purchased in 1824 and transported to Ommen, after which the mill was rebuilt into a saw mill. Behind the mill was a chamber in which trees were first watered before they were sawn. In 1895 the new miller switched to grinding grain because it yielded more. The Ommen Regional Museum is located underneath the mill.
