Tour of Groenlo and Zwillbrocker Venn

Your route starts at Eetcafe Restaurant Spiekerman. Further on you drive through Groenlo. During the Eighty Years' War, Groenlo was besieged several times and the town also came under fire during the Dutch War in 1672. Most of the fortifications were demolished, but the bastions, moats and cannons can still be seen. You can still see many beautiful buildings in the well-preserved old center. The Old Calixtus Church was built between 1275 and 1520. In the countryside you drive on car-free roads through the scenic landscape. Just across the border you drive through the rough swamp of the Zwillbrocker Venn, one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany. This is the northernmost breeding area for flamingos in Europe, you can spot them between March and June.
