Tour of Groenlo and Zwillbrocker Venn

Your route starts at Eetcafe Restaurant Spiekerman. Further on you drive through Groenlo. During the Eighty Years' War Groenlo was besieged several times and also during the Dutch War in 1672 the town came under fire. Most fortifications were demolished, but the bastions, moats and cannons can still be seen. In the well-preserved old center you can still see many beautiful buildings. The Old Calixtus Church was built between 1275 and 1520. In the countryside you drive on car-free roads through the coulisse landscape. Just over the border you drive through the rough swamp of the Zwillbrocker Venn, one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany. This is the northernmost breeding ground for flamingos in Europe, you can spot them between March and June.
