The Ardennes is known for its wooded slopes and charming old villages. This route takes you through the surroundings of the Walloon village of Walcourt.
Churches and castles
Almost every village has its own church. Some are extremely beautiful and old, such as the church in honor of Saint-Remi in Gourdinne. In Yves-Gomezée there is a fourteenth-century Gothic church. The tower was erected in 1868. A century later, the tower had to be shortened to prevent it from falling over. Thy-le-Château grew up around a castle built by a crusader in the twelfth century. According to legend, the crusader was inspired by an oriental fortress in the port city of Tyr.
Former fortified city
Walcourt is one of the nicer towns in Wallonia and is located at the confluence of the rivers Eau d\\\'Heure and Yves. The picturesque center clearly bears the history of the medieval fortified town that Walcourt once was. The most famous sight is the ancient Sint-Maternus Basilica. The church tower is no less than 63 meters high. You can see the tower from far and wide.
