Looking for the other North Holland? Then take a walk through West Friesland. Within the Omringdijk you will find plenty of nature and cultural history.

Frisian history
This route starts at De Schapenstreek, a farm shop on the water in the nature reserve 'De Weelen'. A nice place to stock up on something tasty for the road. Then you set off to the old villages of Hoogkarspel and Grootebroek. Characteristic Frisian farmhouses and the dialect betray that this region belonged to the Frisian territory for a long time in the Middle Ages, because the inhabitants did not want to submit to the counts of Holland.

De Weelen
In nature reserve De Weelen you can see the mining pattern from the Middle Ages, with ditches that run from north to south. Until the 1960s, agriculture was practiced on those small strips. The 49 meter high water tower of Hoogkarspel, built in 1930, rises above the horizon. From a distance it looks like a church tower. Remains of a burial mound and agricultural settlement from 1000 BC have been found nearby.
