322638 Walking around the historic Soesterberg Air Base

This brisk walk takes you around the extensive grounds of the former Soesterberg military airfield. Years ago this was a hermetically sealed stronghold, but it is now open to the public. The base was closed in 2008 and the military then left the site. The starting point of this route is just outside Soesterberg. From here you walk along a leafy road with beautiful villas to the village of Huis ter Heide. You can also enjoy a quiet and beautiful environment there. You then continue walking along the outer edge of Den Dolder. The area on your right consists of the outer areas of Park Vliegbasis Soesterberg. This airbase was once the cradle of military aviation in the Netherlands. At the end of the route you will arrive at Hotel Kontakt der Kontinenten. This hotel is beautifully situated between the woods, so you can relax in a natural environment.

Visitors will be thrown back at the sight of the imposing National Military Museum building. And then you are not even in! Tanks, planes and, for example, a rocket launcher pose in the large hall with thirteen meters high glass walls. Admire these tough tools from the Dutch army and air force and wander through the entire Arsenal. As if they were still flying through the clouds in a fast flight. The aircraft of the Dutch Air Force, for example, are displayed in the National Military Museum. On the ground are their brothers, the tanks and other vehicles of the Army. The complete Dutch armed forces and its history can be admired here. Take a look at the Leopard 2A6, for example, a battle tank that was the showpiece of the Ministry of Defense for many years. Every piece in the museum has a story. Such as the dinghy with which German soldiers paddle to Rotterdam in May 1940 to enter the battle.
