Tour of estates and castles on the Heuvelrug

From the starting point, Restaurant Grebbelounge, you first cycle to Heimerstein Castle. During the Battle of Grebbeberg in 1940 it was completely destroyed, but the castle was rebuilt in 1946. You will also see the Nieuwe Molen, a flour mill from 1911. Further on you will pass Fort aan de Buursteeg, which was built in 1786. In 1940, this fort was in the middle of the front line when the Germans invaded. Around Renswoude Castle you cycle through an idyllic environment of old farms, hedgerows and lowland streams. The castle itself dates from 1350. Ridderhofstad Zuylestein Estate was destroyed in the Second World War. A new country house was built in 1980, the gatehouse and orangery were restored. You cycle back straight through the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
