Nearby you will discover the German War Cemetery. From here you will first cycle along the highest point of De Peel: De Paardekop. The area is varied and diverse, with higher and lower, dry and damp heathland, forests, fens and water. The name 'De Paardekop' comes from a legend about a battle that took place in the area between riders. Many horse skulls are said to have been found there. Then you will discover the typical nature of De Peel. De Deurnsche Peel and the adjacent Mariapeel around the peat colonies Griendtsveen and Helenaveen are also remnants of this once so extensive raised bog area. The area had dried out considerably due to the peat excavations, now an attempt is being made to preserve the raised bog by making the nature wetter again.
