Description

In Groede, during the Second World War, there was a large cross on the church tower: during the Battle of the Scheldt, this was a Red Cross village, or an 'open village'. The warring parties took in their wounded here. As a result, it was not bombed and was beautifully preserved. Around an old farm, you will find a beautiful deciduous forest: the Knokkertbos. Owls, woodpeckers and salamanders live there. From here, you cycle to the coast, where you will discover the Verdronken Zwarte polder. The name comes from the Zwarte Polder, which flooded in 1802. The seawater that flowed in and out with the tide formed channels in the former fields, where sea clay and silt were deposited. Dunes cover the remains of the dike.
