Description

From here you walk to the coast, where you discover the Verdronken Zwarte Polder. The name comes from the Zwarte Polder, which flooded in 1802. The seawater that flowed in and out with the tide formed channels in the former fields, where sea clay and silt were deposited. Dunes cover the remains of the dike, through sand that was carried by the wind. A nice boardwalk leads you quickly to the beach. The sea still enters the area through the slufter, an opening in the row of dunes. The area is getting higher and therefore sweetens, because seawater no longer reaches that far. Because of this transition you will find many special plant species there. A herd of Drenthe heath sheep keeps the area open.
