From here you can discover the old villages of Grootebroek and Hoogkarspel. Characteristic Frisian farmhouses and the dialect reveal that this region belonged to Frisian territory for a long time in the Middle Ages, because the inhabitants did not want to submit to the Counts of Holland. In the De Weelen nature reserve you can see the development pattern from the Middle Ages, with ditches that run from north to south. Until the 1960s, agriculture was practiced on these small strips. Above the horizon, the 49-metre-high water tower of Hoogkarspel, built in 1930, rises. On the way back, you will pick up another water gate in Enkhuizen, Waterpoort de Boerenboom. This gate in the fortress wall used to provide access to the city via the water
