Description

Your route starts at EuroParcs Enkhuizer Strand. From here you will discover the old villages of Grootebroek and Hoogkarspel. Characteristic Frisian farmhouses and the dialect reveal that this region belonged to Frisian territory for a long time in the Middle Ages, because the residents did not want to submit to the counts of Holland. In the De Weelen nature reserve you can see the reclamation pattern from the Middle Ages, with ditches running from north to south. Agriculture was practiced on those small strips until the 1960s. The 49-meter-high water tower of Hoogkarspel, built in 1930, rises above the horizon. On the way back you will see another water gate in Enkhuizen, Waterpoort de Boerenboom. This gate in the fortress wall used to provide access to the city via the water
