Description

Your route starts at't Paviljoen Rhenen (Bar/Lounge, Restaurant & Hotel). The Grebbeberg is the abrupt end (or beginning) of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The silent forest here consists mainly of oaks. At the foot of the hill you pass the Grebbesluis and the associated eighteenth-century earthen defenses of the Grebbe Line. From the Grebbedijk you look out over the Blauwe Kamer, an unspoilt nature reserve with ponds, grasslands and swamp forest. Further on, take a walk along the floodplains and look out over the Rhine. You pass Heimerstein Castle, which was completely destroyed during the Battle of Grebbeberg in 1940. The castle was rebuilt in 1946. After a delicious lunch at your starting point, the second loop of this route takes you through Rhenen.
