Your route starts at Gasterij Natuurlijk Smeerling. After the beautiful fortified town of Bourtange, you'll cycle a short distance through the German Emsland region, via the Hasseberg. This hill, situated over 14 meters above sea level, is the highest point in the province of Groningen. Near Ter Apel, you'll pass the famous medieval Crosier Monastery dating from 1465, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you can stroll through the herb garden and visit an exhibition. At the monastery, you'll cycle through forests planted around 800 and among the oldest in Groningen. You'll see large, imposing old oaks and beeches. Sellingen is a beautiful medieval village built on an es-shaped plot, its eye-catching village church dating from 1300. You'll also cycle through the Ruiten Aa valley: a variety of rolling fields, meadows, copses, and hedgerows.
