Your route starts on the nice terrace of Bie de Veldwachter in Amstenrade. From here you walk to Passarts-Nieuwenhagen Castle, a rectangular mansion and a U-shaped farm. The history goes back to the fourteenth century. The name comes from the first owner, Wilhelm van Nuwenhagen, and the person who owned the castle in the sixteenth century: Ulrich van Blitterswijk, called Passart. Further on you will discover the highlight of the route (and the wider region): Hoensbroek Castle, one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. And one of the most beautiful! There was a motte on this site as early as around 1225. Due to its strategic location on the trade routes to Maastricht, Aachen and Cologne, this original castle developed into the largest castle between the Maas and the Rhine.
