Ammersoyen Castle was very popular due to its strategic location on the Maas. It was conquered in 1386 by Duke William I of Gelre, when the lord of the castle wanted to enter into an alliance with Joanna of Brabant. At the end of the fifteenth century it was sold to the lords of Arkel, lords of the count of Holland. After the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), various noble families owned the castle as a residence. During the Second World War, the castle was so badly damaged that the nuns, who had lived there since 1876, had to move. After the war, the castle came into the possession of the later Geldersch Landschap en Kasteelen Foundation. The castle of Well, also known as the House of Malsen, is a water castle from the fourteenth century. During the Disaster Year of 1672, French troops destroyed the castle. In the centuries that followed, it was rebuilt and expanded. The castle is privately owned, but you can see it nicely through the trees.
