Your walk starts at Huupkens IJs. Walk into the Stadspark with your ice cream in hand, past the old tithe barn. You walk behind a beautiful old castle here. In the thirteenth century, the Lords of Horne built Aldeborch Castle, on the Biest. In the fifteenth century a new fortress was built further on: Nijenborgh. The Friars Minor converted Aldeborch into a monastery, Nijenborgh was destroyed in 1702 during the Siege of Weert. A mansion was later built on the foundations. On the Markt you can see the former town hall from the sixteenth century, now the Jacob van Horne Museum. The Saint Martin's Church dates from 1456 and is one of the last two surviving hall churches in the Netherlands. Also special: on the Noordkade you can see the only preserved clay pipe oven in Western Europe.
