Description

Your walk starts at Huupkens IJs. With your ice cream in hand, walk into the City Park, past the old tithe shed. You walk past a beautiful old castle here. In the thirteenth century, the Lords of Horne built Aldeborch Castle, on the Biest. In the fifteenth century a new fortress was built further up: Nijenborgh. The Friars Minor converted Aldeborch into a monastery, Nijenborgh was destroyed in 1702 at the Siege of Weert. A mansion was later built on the foundations. On the Markt you can see the former town hall from the sixteenth century, now the Jacob van Horne Museum. The Sint-Martinuskerk dates from 1456 and is one of the last two hall churches still in existence in the Netherlands. Also special: on the Noordkade you can see the only surviving clay pipe kiln in Western Europe.
