In the Achetrhoek you will discover the Barchemse Veengoot, which was dug around 1850 based on an idea by poet and agriculturalist ACW Staring. He himself lived on the nearby De Wildenborch estate. This dewatered the peat so that it became suitable for agriculture. Indirectly, this drainage was of great significance for the entire Achterhoek. The Berkel often caused flooding in Lochem, but Staring was unable to improve the situation. That was what his sons did: Winand and Willem, who took over from him. It took until 1882 before a water board was established for De Berkel. You continue walking through a beautiful rural area. It is still wonderfully quiet here!
