Tour of Bourtange and Ruiten Aa

Your route starts at Camperplaats Op Streek. In Wedde you can take a look at the Church of Wedde, a modest structure that nevertheless dates from the thirteenth century. Some lords of the Wedderburcht are buried there, which you also cycle past. The Wedderburcht, or Huis te Wedde, dates from the fourteenth century. Further on is the beautiful fortified village of Bourtange, where you will experience a unique cultural history. This fortified village looks much the same as it did in 1742. William of Orange had the fortress built in the sixteenth century to liberate Groningen from Spanish hands. You drive back through the valley of the Ruiten Aa. Here you see grain-covered ash trees and grasslands bordered with hedgerows. The characteristic Groningen farms are not missing either!
