Description

From the start, via junction 56, you drive up along the Amstel. Halfway you cross the Magere Brug, the authentic drawbridge that is beautifully lit at night.

Attention
Be careful not to get into anyone's wheels on the busy Waterlooplein. For the less experienced city cyclist you must have eyes and ears at the front and at the back. From the Waterlooplein you drive into the Jodenbreestraat, where you will find the Rembrandt House Museum at the end. This is the house where Rembrandt lived between 1639 and 1658. The Nieuwmarkt is a beautiful old part of Amsterdam with the monumental Waag in the center. Every day there is a market on the square. A funny detail is that you take the ferry for a short distance on this route. You get on behind Central Station. The Pontveren of the Municipal Transport Company sail every ten minutes. They are free and will take you to Amsterdam North within five minutes.
Outside Amsterdam it is easy to breathe again on the narrow roads along the water. Surrounded by meadows, Broek in Waterland looks like a real farming village. Yet it was originally a skipper's village, where many shipowners, captains and wealthy merchants came to live in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Their wealth made Broek in Waterland one of the most prosperous villages in Waterland.
That luxury was also reflected in the stately houses that the Broekers had built, with the most beautiful interiors. The original interior can still be admired in a number of monumental buildings. The monumental buildings can also be recognized by the pastel colours. Monnickendam fits in the list of tourist places like Volendam and Edam that are true hotspots for tourists from across the oceans. It has a beautiful historic city center.

Monnickendam
When you enter Monnickendam, the Sint Nicolaaskerk towers above the city panorama. Monnickendam has a protected cityscape with many historic houses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At the inner harbor is the'Waegh\\\' where cheese used to be inspected and weighed. Later, women accused of witchcraft were also weighed. They were checked to see if they were light enough to be witches. Monnickendam has been known for its fish smokehouses since the distant past. Fish is still smoked in the harbor and you will undoubtedly smell it.
You continue cycling along the banks of the Gouwzee, an inland waterway of the Markermeer, and so you cycle back into Amsterdam via the small towns of Uitdam and Durgerdam over Zeeburgereiland.
