The old city center of Alkmaar is easy to explore by bike. From the city you can also cycle straight into the vast polder to the Alkmaarder and Uitgeestermeer.
Twin Lake
In the polder you cycle through a characteristic Dutch landscape of grasslands, ditches and high skies. In this surprisingly quiet area you can look far and wide around you. You pass the Noordermolen from 1589 and, a little further on, the Oude Knegt flour mill. You can take a break along the banks of the Alkmaarder and Uitgeestermeer and quietly look out over the rippling water. An ideal way to clear your head.
Old cheese town
Limmen has become the center of bulb growing. The Flower Days are held here every spring. You can also visit the Hortus Bulborum, a unique museum garden where more than 4,000 different spring bulbous plants have now been collected. In Alkmaar you can visit many historic buildings. There are no fewer than 399 national monuments in the old city center, wow!
