Round Roden from the Leekstermeer

Your route starts at Cnossen Leekstermeer. From here you cycle to Roden. The village and the church were first mentioned in 1139. Next to the church is the Mensinge manor. The current house was built in 1646 and is now a museum. The associated estate is part of the Mensingebos. The oak avenues that line the forest areas are striking. At the edge of the forest is the'Kapteyn\\\' observatory of the University of Groningen. Nienoord Estate is best known for the former Borg Nienoord. A nineteenth-century country house now stands on the spot where the castle was built in 1525. The Van Ewsum family of the Nienoord borg has started the major peat extraction here. They drained the area with the construction of the Leekster Hoofddiep.
