Central Limburg Castle Route: a loop around Roermond

This route takes you through the heart of Roermond and past several castles. Aldenghoor is the first castle you pass; it originally dates back to the thirteenth century. You ride to charming Neer, after which you cross the Maas and ride through the forests of the Swalmdal. In the countryside of Boukoul, you pass two castles. Hillenraad is a moated castle in Maasland Baroque style, and Zuidewijk is a fortified farmhouse. Via Asenray, you cycle to Roermond. In the city centre, you can dismount for a moment and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere. On the other side of the Maas, you pass Horn Castle, one of the oldest still-intact ring-walled castles in the Netherlands. Finally, you ride through the deciduous forest of the Leudal. The route ends with a bite to eat and a drink at Cafe Restaurant St. Servaas.
