Tour through the Hogeland from Winsum

Your walk starts at Marenland Recreatie on the Winsumerdiep in Winsum, a picturesque village in Groningen. It will take a while before you leave Winsum, because in this old village you walk through a few atmospheric streets. You will pass two corn mills: the Ster dates from 18515, the Vriendschap from 1801. A little further on is the beautiful Torenkerk, the oldest part of which dates from the twelfth century. The indoor church tower from the seventeenth century has a striking feature: there is a wooden outside staircase attached to it. The route also takes you through the Hogeland, an open landscape of grasslands, fields and maars. It is wonderfully quiet under the high skies. And you can get a breath of fresh air while you walk along the winding dikes.
