When you think of Den Helder, you think of water and a rich maritime history. But in and around this naval city you will also find many beautiful nature reserves. This route introduces you to the varied green belt around the city.

Soon after boarding you drive past the Timor Park, which has been laid out in English landscape style. Via the line dike you cycle to Fort Dirksz. Admiral, one of the four fortresses of the Defense Line of Den Helder. This theorem was developed by Napoleon. He found the city's location ideal for a naval port and associated defense.

Along the artistic Nollen landscape of the late artist Ruud van de Wint you drive to the Mariëndal where low dunes and dune grasslands now grow on the former bulb soil. You enter the Grafheidsduinen through the coniferous forest of the Donkere Duinen. Both nature reserves were formed from the remains of two old Wadden islands that grew together through shifting sand in the sixteenth century.

In the distance you can already see Lange Jaap, a lighthouse that was lit in 1878. At almost 64 metres, it is the tallest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe. Before you reach the lighthouse, you can make another exit to Fort Kijkduin, one of those other forts from the Defense Line of Den Helder.

The route then leads you along the coast to the port of Den Helder. You will pass the Marine Museum, where you can experience the past and present of the Dutch navy first hand. Former crew members tell wonderful anecdotes on board some of the museum ships. You might see one of the Dutch warships in the harbor of the Royal Navy. Via the eastern side of Den Helder you cycle to the relatively new Schooterduinpark and the Rehorstpark.
