Then you walk to the Lage lighthouse of IJmuiden, one of the two round, red-brown, cast-iron towers that guard the mouth of the IJgeul. This lighthouse is so small because three floors were removed in 1909. These have been moved to Vlieland to form an independent lighthouse. The landscape at the North Sea Canal is very different than in the dunes. Who knows what kind of big ships you will see up close! When you look at the water, take a moment to think about all the hard work that went into the construction of the canal: an entire dune area was excavated by hand. You walk back along the Kennemermeer.
